HMANA’s Mission

The Hawk Migration Association of North America (HMANA) was founded in 1974 and incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the State of New York. Since establishing our headquarters in Michigan in 2017, we are also a licensed nonprofit organization there.

Our Mission: HMANA advances scientific knowledge and promotes the conservation of raptor populations through the study, enjoyment, and appreciation of raptor migration.

HMANA:

  • Collects hawk count data from almost two hundred affiliated raptor monitoring sites throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
  • Publishes the semi-annual journal Hawk Migration Studies, which includes seasonal reports on the migration and more.
  • Provides HawkCount, a near-real-time international database of hawk counts across the continent.
  • Maintains BIRDHAWK, a subscription-based email list.
  • Is a driving force behind the Raptor Population Index (RPI) to promote scientific analysis of hawk count data.

HMANA is committed to celebrating diversity, and striving for equity, inclusion and accessibility are integral to our mission “To advance scientific knowledge and promote conservation of raptor populations through study, enjoyment, and appreciation of raptor migration.” Internally, HMANA will critically evaluate our institutional and procedural processes for bias, foster diverse contributors, equal access and inclusive environments in all our activities. We encourage all hawk watch sites within the Hawkcount raptor monitoring network to strive to be safe spaces for all, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, veteran status, marital status, nationality, political beliefs, citizenship or country of origin. Hawk watch sites should be free of discrimination, violence, prejudice or intimidation. Those spaces should foster inclusion, by making sites accessible to all visitors, wherever possible. HMANA supported organizations are encouraged to actively reach out to marginalized communities, create support networks that facilitate visitation and conservation outreach to those communities, and to actively work to improve diversity within their own institutions, volunteer and professional ranks.
