American Kestrel
Falco sparverius

A common migrant through much of the United States and Canada and the western mountains. Less common in the northwest, high northern plains, and extreme southern Texas. Well represented at many inland locations, but most numerous at coastal locations along the Atlantic coast and the southern Great Lakes, such as Cape May, NJ, Kiptopeke, VA, and Holiday Beach, ON. Peak time in the north is mid September through mid October; into late October in Florida. Spring numbers are somewhat less. Good locations include Dinosaur Ridge, CO., Fort Smallwood, MD, and Plum Island, MA. Most birds move through northern areas during the first 3 weeks of April.
