| A fairly common migrant in the east and Great Lakes, uncommon in the west. Notable concentration spots in the fall include Lighthouse Point, Connecticut , Cape May, New Jersey, and Kiptopeke, Virginia. Much of the migration in the north occurs from about September 10 through October 10, with adults preceding immatures. The birds return north from late March (a few at Long Island nest sites in mid March) through April along the coast, April into May in the Great Lakes area. Good spring spots include Fort Smallwood, Maryland and Derby Hill, New York. | Photo: Holiday Beach, Ontario / Allen Chartier |
