Rough-legged Hawk
Buteo lagopus

A fairly common fall migrant along northern shores of the Great Lakes, especially Hawk Ridge, Minnesota. In general, uncommon south of Canada, but in the west a few reach as far as New Mexico. Irruptive with much greater numbers some years at sites such as Mount Lorette, Alberta. Many birds wintering in the east drift down after fall hawk watch coverage has ended to provide fairly good numbers for the return passage through the southern Great Lakes.
