| A common migrant throughout much of the United States and southern Canada. Especially large numbers of migrants occur in fall along the north shore of Lake Erie, in Florida, and at Marin Headlands, California and in spring along the south shore of Lake Erie and at Fort Smallwood, Maryland. Its wide ranging feeding habits often cause difficulties at hawk watches in assessing migrant activity. Nevertheless, migrants may occur at any time. One of the first birds to move north in spring, as early as mid-February. Peak flights typically in early April. Fall movements peak over the second half of October in the north, November in Florida. | Photo: Hook Mt., Rockland co., NY, April 18, 1998 / Steve Walter |
