Hawkwatching and Photography of Whitefish Point

Josh Haas first developed a love for hawks working with the birds of prey at the Kalamazoo Nature Center. A hawk-watching trip to Lake Erie Metropark opened his eyes to hawks in migration. He would end up spending seven Fall seasons working with the Detroit River Hawkwatch where he developed a love for teaching visitors not only how to tell the shadowy specs apart but also some of the best ways to capture the essence of migrating raptors through flight photography. From then to now he has spent more than 14 years honing his hawk ID and flight photography skills with a passion for sharing that knowledge with others. Whitefish Pt. is his favorite place for hawk photography and videography and much of his imagery and footage from there can be found on his recently released hawk ID video guide, Hawks on the Wing. His work can be seen on-line at www.hawksonthewing.com, in several birding apps along with publications across Michigan.[/author_info] [/author] Join Josh Haas, HMANA board member, hawkwatcher, photographer and tour guide for the trip of a lifetime to witness big flights of raptors along Lake Superior atop a hawk deck at tree-top level. All the usual suspects will take your breath away as they fly overhead and around the deck milling around the point before making the journey across to Canada.  But it’s the specialty species such as Rough-legged Hawks, dark-morph Red-tailed Hawks, Golden Eagles and Northern Goshawks that make Whitefish Pt. one of the most famed hawk watches in North America. Leary migrants hesitant to make the journey across to Canada often find their way in front of the deck multiple times, giving more chances of seeing and photographing these amazing wonders of nature.  This exciting tour will include daily hawk watching, instruction on how to identify them at a distance and what makes this trip very special is the photographic instruction every step of the way.  This includes the best ways to photograph hawks in flight, photographing songbirds, along with side trips after specialty UP birds such as Crossbills, the elusive Spruce Grouse, possible Gray Jays and Snowy Owls (if migration supports).

Josh has been birding and photographing Whitefish Pt. for over 10 years.  In 2017 he released Hawks on the Wing, a movie focused on hawk ID and his work can be seen on-line, in numerous publications.  Take advantage of this amazing opportunity geared towards bird photographers and reserve your spot now for this trip of a lifetime!

Tour cost includes guide(s), ground transportation from the Detroit, MI area for those choosing to fly into the Detroit Airport (and transportation around the Whitefish Pt. area), park fees, lodging, most meals. Airfare to and from MI not included.

Physical demands of the tour are low. Participants need to be able to carry their own birding/photography gear.  Hiking is necessary but mostly on flat ground, sand and never very far from the vehicle. Pace will also be slow and time birding/photographing will take priority.
