Josh Haas and the Merlin Clan
Josh, a HMANA board member, first developed a love for hawks working with the birds of prey at the Kalamazoo Nature Center. A hawk-watching trip to Lake Erie Metropark opened his eyes to hawks in migration. Perplexed by seeing specks at a distance with an overwhelming itch to know what they were, he started learning from veteran hawk watchers and was hooked. He would end up spending seven Fall seasons working with the Detroit River Hawk Watch as a relief counter. Fast forward to today and not only is he still hawk watching, he loves teaching others and has even released a movie on identifying hawks in flight. Josh’s work can be seen and purchased on-line at http://www.hawksonthewing.com, in several birding apps, and in publications across Michigan.
On May 17th along with his father, Josh will be counting birds at and around the Port Crescent Hawkwatch in Michigan’s thumb to raise money for raptor conservation. All birds will be targeted but special focus will be put to migrating raptors. 50% of all donations will go to the HMANA and 50% to the Mackinac Straits Raptor Watch. The money we raise will help fund three important programs:
*HMANA Monitoring Programs and the HMANA Hawk Watch Fund which offers support to the hawk watching community, providing grants to assist watch sites looking for support (i.e. educational materials, construction and maintenance of viewing platforms, hiring hawk watchers, etc.)
*The Mackinac Straits Raptor Watch where funds will go towards education, counting equipment, paying counters and biologists, etc.
My personal goal is to raise at least $1000 for these charities. Will you join me and donate to this cause? If you’re able to donate, please click the button above to make donations by credit card.
If you’re not able to donate, that’s okay too! Either way, please “like” my Hawks on the Wing Facebook page and follow our team on the big day as I’ll be posting photos, tallied birds and stories as the day goes on. Thank you to everyone in advance for following/donating to help these worthy causes and for supporting raptor conservation.
