Ridgetop Rachel and the Wing Watchers – 2020
(Saturday, April 4, 2020)
Rachel’s Raptorthon Plan:
I will begin Raptorthon at Little Gap via road survey to Lehigh Gap following the Kittatinny Ridge to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary and then focus on counting at North Lookout with the support of HMS staff and volunteers. This Raptorthon will allow me to explore and survey 30 miles of the Kittatinny Ridge through Carbon, Northampton, Lehigh, Berks and Schuylkill counties – an important migration corridor for raptors, monarchs and migratory dragonflies!
Raptorthon is a unique and FUN opportunity to share my passion for hawk watching with the Kittatinny Community. It is important for me to participate because monitoring raptor populations and conducting careful analyses takes time and money. As a professional educator, I want to invite everyone to make a pledge, promote migration connectivity, or simply helping to spot birds in the spirit of kinship.
Hawk Mountain operates the longest running raptor count in North America and in partnership with HMANA, has established the first scientific migration-monitoring program for North American migratory raptors. Similarly, HMANA serves as a network providing a big picture forecast of population trends. It’s important for me to support vital raptor conservation research that impacts us all. Join me on Saturday, April 4th and help spot birds to raise money for HMANA and HMS!
