HMANA’s Lunch & Learn Series – The Florida Keys Hawkwatch
Wednesday, November 10 at 12:00 pm EST
November’s Lunch & Learn featured Rafael Galves from the Florida Keys Hawkwatch. Few sites in North America regularly document the passage of migratory Swallow-tailed Kites. Their southeastern distributions, combined with their fall departure as early as July create a challenge for any raptor count. The Florida Keys Hawkwatch conducted its first ever “Kite Flight” initiative during the 2021 season, adding six weeks to the traditional count period.
Rafael Gálvez shared their experiences of the “Kite Flight” in 2021, and other aspects that make migration monitoring in the Florida Keys exciting, including the massive falcon flights and species diversity.
